Change Mail behavior when replying to a message in the Sent mailbox

When using Gmail (I don't know if this is the case with other webmail providers), if you reply to a message in your Sent mailbox, the recipient of the reply message is set to the recipient of the original message you sent. That makes sense, it's useful for quickly replying to a message you've just sent when you realize you've forgotten something (like an attachment).

However, Apple Mail doesn't work that way; if you reply to a message in your Sent mailbox, you (the sender of the original message) become the recipient of the reply message (which is pretty useless in my opinion).

If you choose Reply all instead of Reply, it's a little better: you are still the 'To' recipient of the reply message, but the recipients of the original message are added as Cc: recipients of the reply message.

I used this fact to create an AppleScript that when invoked creates a reply to the selected message in the Sent mailbox in Mail, with the recipients of the original mess ...

Apple discontinues Final Cut Express, reportedly ends Server too

Now that some Tuesday's Final Cut Pro X is available, additional details about Apple's pro video edition solution are available.

Engadget has confirmed with Apple that there won't be a boxed (studio suite) version of Final Cut Pro X. Instead, it will only be available for download through the Mac App Store, alongside separate purchases of Motion (US$49.99) and Compressor ($49.99).

Also, there will be no special upgrade price for owners of previous versions of Final Cut Pro, but with the new price point, it's hard to really complain about that. Finally, Engadget confirms that the days of Final Cut Express are over -- it's either iMovie or Final Cut Pro X from Apple.

AppleInsider corroborates these claims, but adds Final Cut Server to the list. According to "a person familiar with Apple's retail operations," AppleInsider reports that Final Cut Server has been discontinued as of June 21.

Successor to Steve Uncertainty Hurting AAPL Share Price?

The main downward force on Apple's stock price is a lack of clarity around Steve Jobs' successor and questions about how long he will remain at his current post, according to a pair of articles today examining the performance of Apple's stock over the past few months. AAPL is down more than 2% year-to-date, and is down more than 8% since WWDC began.

Henry Blodget at Business Insider:
In a way, the situation Apple finds itself in is akin to an impending CEO retirement--without a successor having been named. In such "lame duck" periods, companies can become paralyzed, as managers focus more on their own future and political stature and uncertainty and less on the business.

And, in Apple's case, unfortunately, the situation is even worse: No one knows whether Steve will return, or when, or even when the question of his return will finally be put to rest. So the company is in a sort of perpetual purgatory.
Rougemont, a contributor at investor haven Seeking Alpha, agrees, noting "this concern is already discounted in the stock."

There may be another, less Steve-related explanation. Last week, there was some extraordinary downward movement on Thursday, on a day without significant bad news. Philip Elmer-Dewitt at Apple 2.0 took a look at weekly options set to expire on Friday as a possible explanation for the sudden plunge.
Among the dwindling numbers of retail Apple investors, there were the usual cries of market manipulation and calls for reform of the weekly options markets, which some believe have become the tail that wags the underlying stock.
Regardless of the reason behind the drop, some view the price dip as a buying opportunity.

Both Horace Dediu at Asymco and Andy Zaky at Bullish Cross believe this drop is a buying opportunity, with Zaky assigning a "buy" recommendation for any price between $300 and $320, with a $500 price target:
Because of the market's short-term blindness to this obvious reality, we find it prudent to put a strong-buy rating on the stock if it so happens to trade under $300 during a potential brutal summer correction.
Apple just closed at $315, down a point percent and a half on the day.

Apple unveils new 3 TB Time Capsule model (Updated)

Just as we were digesting the Final Cut Pro X arrival, word comes that Apple is also unveiling a new Time Capsule model. The 3TB model appears in the image header of the Time Capsule page on Apple's website, but full product details are not yet available. We'll keep you updated as new information is released.

The part numbers and FCC IDs of the new units leaked last night, so it was reasonable to expect the actual devices pretty quickly. TUAW first reported that an AirPort/Time Capsule refresh was in the works back on June 1, when retail supplies of the wireless routers began to dry up.

Update: The new 3 TB Time Capsule will be priced at $499 and is available now on Apple's web site. The 2TB is $299. Looks like the product got a capacity bump, but that rumored tie-in to iCloud did not materialize.

IPhone gains eat into Android dominance. Can it last?

The Android smartphone onslaught may have hit its peak, at least in the U.S., according to an analyst who thinks that the expanded rollout of the iPhone to other carriers will check the rise of Google's OS. Cheaper iPhones will also help eat into Android's lead.

Get Account Info in Mail

In Mail.app, press Command+I on the Inbox icon (or right-click on it and choose 'Get Account Info') and sample the awesomeness. Actually, this works with any of the main mailbox icons. Just select an account from the popup menu.

It gives space usage for each folder and quota limits for the account, plus other settings from the 'Account Info' preference, and works for Gmail and Exchange too. I just stumbled onto it and found it worth sharing.

[crarko adds: I tested this, and it works as described. I hadn't seen this one before either. I looked, but didn't see a previous hint on it. Let me know if I'm mistaken.]

Starting foreign language Acrobat on English OS X

Acrobat 10 doesn't accept serial numbers for international versions of Acrobat (or the CS suite) if the operating system is running in a different language than the purchased one. This hint discusses a few workarounds.

Acrobat comes with several language packages and runs by default with the language of the operating system. In this case however it doesn't accept serial numbers which are bound to a specific language. As it seems there are three work arounds (the first two are also mentioned by the Adobe support team):

The obvious one: Run OSX in the same language as Acrobat was purchased in. At least in my case not an option.

Use a program such as Language Switcher. I have not tried that but it probably does the same as option 3 below, only temporarily.

Remove the English language package (of course at your own risk): Open the Acrobat package, navigate to Contents/Resources and ...
