Mac OS X 10.6.8 to Remove MacDefender, Get Mac App Store Ready for Lion

Apple seeded developers with Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K531) on Friday. As first noted by fscklog.com, the 10.6.8 update will offer a number of interesting enhancements.

First, Apple will use the 10.6.8 to identify and remove known variants of the Mac Defender malware. Apple released a support document last week detailing the Mac Defender malware and promising a software update to remove it. It appears 10.6.8 will be the update that accomplishes it.

Next, Apple is said to be "enhancing the Mac App Store" to get your Mac ready to upgrade to Mac OS X Lion. Lion is believed to be offered to customers via the Mac App Store. It is presently distributed to developers via Mac App Store downloads, so it's no stretch of the imagination that Apple will also be offering it to customers in the same way. Apple is expected to provide more details about Mac OS X Lion at the annual Worldwide Developer's Conference which kicks off on June 6th.

MacBook Air Supplies Constrained and On Sale Ahead of Refresh

Both CNet and Digitimes have pinpointed the 2011 Macbook Air refreshes for the June-July timeframe. So, it should be no surprise that according to retail sources of 9to5mac, Apple's MacBook Air supplies are becoming constrained around the world.

The 2011 MacBook Air is believed to adopt the latest Sandy Bridge processors which come with Intel's embedded graphics chipset. This is a decision that Apple has already made for the latest low-end MacBook Pros, so we expect they will make the same decision in the new MacBook Airs. The new Airs should also adopt the Thunderbolt high speed connector that was introduced earlier this year.

Appleheadlines notes that MacBook Airs are on sale at some Best Buys. Several readers have also noted that the refurbished MacBook Airs on Apple's online store have also dropped in price. These price drops, however, may represent soft demand in the MacBook Airs rather than any particular knowledge about the new releases.

Turtle Beach PX5 Review: Your Home Theater Mac?s New Best Friend

All Macs released in recent years support true surround sound via optical out, but you need a home theater system to take advantage. Luckily, the Turtle Beach PX5 gaming headset provides an alternative that's quieter, better for small spaces, and probably cheaper for Mac HTPC setups.

Alaska Airlines first major in US with iPad flight manuals

Alaska Airlines on Friday had the distinction of being the first large US carrier to use iPads as flight manuals on all flights and routes. All pilots will be receiving the Apple tablet loaded with the GoodReader app and PDF copies of all the aircraft manuals, reference charts, and other content they would need for their flights. Moving to the iPad not only saves a large amount of weight, dropping from 25 pounds to 1.5 pounds, but has active links between documents and color that normally wouldn't reach the printed copies....

Apple Considering Samsung OLED Displays for Next-Generation iPad?

Talk of Apple turning to OLED displays for its mobile devices has arisen repeatedly for many years now, and those rumors have received another update with a claim from The Korea Herald (via Macworld UK) that Apple Chief Operating Office Tim Cook recently visited South Korea to discuss the possibility of adopting an active matrix OLED (AMOLED) display from Samsung for the next-generation iPad, a device the report claims could be released before the end of the year.
Apple Inc's chief operating officer Tim Cook discussed adopting Samsung's AMOLED display technology for tablet PCs during his recent visit to South Korea, industry sources said.

"Apple wants to tap into Samsung's AMOLED technology for an upgraded version of the iPad2, considered as many as the iPad3 that is likely to be launched toward the end of this year," a source told The Korea Herald on Wednesday (May 25) on condition of anonymity.
Samsung is already one of Apple's primary suppliers for its mobile devices, although the two companies are currently embroiled in a legal dispute begun when Apple filed suit against Samsung for allegedly copying Apple's technology and designs with its "Galaxy" line of smartphones and tablets.

But while the latest report claims that Apple is looking to Samsung for AMOLED technology, a previous report from a different Korean publication claimed that Apple was interested in the company's "Super PLS" technology for more traditional LCDs in the next iPad.

A complete iPhone solution for reverse caller lookup

Number Guru gets you information when caller ID doesn't. This free iPhone app allows you to input any phone number and figure out who is calling you. It's particularly nice when you get spam telemarketer calls, because the app has some crowdsourcing features that can provide more information than just a company name.

The app covers 100 percent of listed US landlines and about half of US cellular numbers. The app will also identify the carrier the call came through, although it can get confused over ported numbers. I saw that myself, because I'm on AT&T after originally being on Verizon, and Number Guru misidentified my carrier. Verizon doesn't supply any caller information, so a Verizon call won't be identified.

Number Guru asks (but does not require) you to upload your contacts. According to the developer that information is not shared with anyone else, but will be part of some future enhancements to the software. (I opted out.) The app also has one of the longest and foggiest terms of service agreements I have ever seen. It's a long scroll on your iPhone, and you can't use the app without agreeing. I couldn't see anything evil in the TOS, but it's available online if you want to read it yourself. The developer says it's going to work on shortening the TOS and making the terms clearer.

Number Guru does what it advertises. There are similar services on the web already, but some of them cost money. This app has a comprehensive database, and in my tests it worked well. If you're constantly wondering who is calling you, this is a handy app.
